The Legend of Amah RockIn Tricia Tanaka is Dead, Hugo's dad Cheech rides away on a YAMAHA motorcycle but the name on the gas tank says AMAH.
Located high above the coast of Shatin, Hong Kong, the Amah Rock is a stone formation that resembles a woman holding a child. According to the Amah Rock Legend, the rock was a fisherman's wife who was waiting for her husband to return from the sea. She climbed to the top of the mountain everyday with her child to stand watch not knowing that her husband had drowned.
Her husband never returned and the Gods, in honor of her faithfulness, turned her to stone, immortalizing her love and hope as her spirit joined her husband. The Cantonese for Amah Rock is Mong Fu Shek or "the stone that is gazing out for her husband."
As Cheech rides off on the AMAH Bike, cut to Hugo's mom standing at the upstairs window, gazing out for her husband.
Hugo's adventures on the Island during the episode embody hope. You have to make your own luck. You always gotta have hope, Hugo. Hope starts the Dharma Van. Sawyer has said that there ain't no hope on this Island. But Hugo is hope. All in all, this episode was most fun. It was even fun drinking beers with Ben's Dead Dad. Lost.
If you build the rest of the body based on the Four-Toed Statue, you have a figure standing at the shore gazing out to sea for eternity. The idealized Amah Rock.
We weren't supposed to leave. We have to go back.
The Rock, waiting for eternity.
So, which characters have people waiting for them back in the Real World?
Jack, no, not really.
Kate, no.
Sawyer, no.
Bernard/Rose, no.
Sun/Jin, no, kinda, but they were running away from Poppa Paik.
Eko, no, oh, dead.
Danielle, no.
Locke, no.
Ben, no.
Michael, no.
Walt, no.
Charlie, no, oh, dead again and again and again.
Claire/Aaron, adoptive parents, maybe.
Hugo, yes. (Amah Rock)
Desmond, yes. (Eternal hope)
Juliet, yes. (False hope)
The Four-Toed Statue as the Amah Rock Meta-Phormula:
* The Rock builders hold eternal hope of returning (to the Island or to time?)
* Jack wants to return to the Island, but can he?
* Desmond turns the key and Penny's Peeps spot him, like the Amah Rock from on high, Penny is the Fisherman's Wife to Desmond's Sailor Act, she is the one who says with a lot of money you can find anything you want, eternal hope
* Danielle's beacon, the message that repeated over and over, waiting for someone to return the call, broadcast from high above the coast
* Danielle, who births a child on the Island like Claire, lost her child and found her again, Danielle's eternal hopelessness defeated, mother holding her child, Father Robert dead from the sickness, lost at sea
* Jin is a fisherman, Sun is pregnant, oh crap...
* Hugo and the Hurley Bird are inextricably linked to the Island, he embodies hope and defines the Fisherman Lost at Sea, according to the Amah Rock Legend, he can't...
The Legend says the Fisherman never returns from sea and the Amah Rock stands for eternity. The most important parallel to calculate into the Meta-Phormula is that the Amah Rock on the Island, the Four-Toed Statue, is BROKEN!
