The Mind is all in your Island
In trying to bridge the gap between the scientific theories about LOST, and the philosophical, I was drawn to ideas of consciousness and time. Both have a rich history of scientific and philosophical debate and discussion. Both seem to be widely misunderstood by the public, and therefore are fertile ground for the exploration of their more mysterious elements.
Consciousness is associated by modern science with the brain. However, where consciousness exists is hotly debated. There are, in fact, “
space-time” theories of consciousness that suggest that consciousness exists in it’s own dimension or dimensions.
Time has been shown by Einstein to be associated with space, in a phenomenon known as “spacetime”. The three dimensions of space are combined with the dimension of time to yield a 4D spacetime. The basic elements of spacetime are events. In any given spacetime, an event is a unique position at a unique time.
Spacetime has been shown to curve in the presence of matter or fields of energy, thus creating the phenomena of relative time, areas of space in which time moves faster or slower relative to other areas.
Imagine a world where the dimension of consciousness overlays or is connected to the dimensions of spacetime. It might be possible for a curved region of spacetime to be encompassed by the dimension of consciousness. In essence, one would be able to consciously perceive events in spacetime at relative rates. Desmond’s flashes might be an example of such an experience.
What if the properties of the island allow spacetime to be curved in such a way as to allow current and future events to be experienced by the conscious mind? What if matter or fields of energy curve the dimension of consciousness in the same way that spacetime dimensions are affected? Is it possible that DHARMA was able to engineer such a curvature? Or maybe they were able to access the dimension of consciousness via a wormhole.
Imagine that the Whispers, “events” in the dimension of consciousness are, through the curvature created by the island’s energy fields, brought into proximity to the consciousnesses of the Lostaways or the Others. Imagine that some of the people who experience this are “gifted” such that their minds construct visual simulacra associated with some of the consciousnesses that they perceive. Jack’s visions of Christian, or Ben and Locke’s visions of Jacob might be examples of this.
