Why the Oceanic Six?

Ben is the one who takes the O6 off the Island and each one is serving him a particular purpose:

Sayid- because Ben needs a dedicated assasin. Now convinced that Widmore is trying to take over the Island, Sayid realizes an important step would be to eliminate "every living thing" in order to get rid of the evidence. This is neccessary in order for Widmore to claim the Island his own discovery. Sayid may hate Ben to the core, but there is no way he's not going to "protect his friends."

Hurley- because he can see Jacob and that is a major threat to Ben. Ben can't leave Hurley on the Island and risk Jacob helping him to take power away from Ben or revealing Island "secrets." ----Can't comment about Locke until the last 2 of the O6 are revealed

Jack- because he is a threat to Ben's delusional romance with Juliet and a threat to Ben in general. In Ben's mind, Jack's being "rescued" also helps keep Kate happy and away from the Island as well. Probably more to this, just haven't come up with anything as convincing.

Aaron- because of his specialness, Ben took Aaron. Either he is harmful to the Island, a threat to Ben, or somehow more useful to Ben off the Island.

Kate - for a few possible reasons (1) because if he left her behind Jack would be even more motivated to find his own way back to the Island. (2) He needed a believable mother for Aaron. Kate could be manipulated into this position because of her feelings for Claire, because a jury would have more sympathy for a mother, or because Ben promised to manipulate the trial in Kate's favor in return. The trial fiasco, Kate's getting off so easily, and her not being permitted to leave L.A (not being permitted to go back to the Island to help) might have to do with Ben.

It's possible that Ben has every intention of returning to the Island once his "Widmore" mission is complete and he has no plan for bringing the O6 back with him. Ben is still the only one who truely knows how the Island "works" and that keeps him in a great position of power. The O6 will forever keep their lie going to spare themselves and their friends back on the Island from Ben.

Back on the Island, Ben might spare himself by manipulating the situation to look like he "saved" the O6 . Either that or find a way to manipulate them into remaining docile, the way he did to Juliet using her sister. Whatever the case may be, it brings up some interesting on-island episodes to watch while the O6 struggle to find their way back.
