ONE HUGE THEORY: Alvar Hanso, Widmore & DHARMA

Hey everyone! I'm a huge LOST fan, and i wrote up this theory. A friend of mine on here said I should go on and post it, so here it is!

So the island we now know as ‘Lost Island’ or ‘Dharma Island’ has more history than we’ve seen. We all know that this island is mysterious and perhaps even magical. We’ve also seen substantial evidence that points toward the island being a fountain of youth: 1) When Ben was 10 or so and he went out into the jungle alone, he saw Richard, an island native. Ben is around age 40 now, and Richard still looks around the same age, minus the scraggly hair and beard.

2) When Richard gave Juliet the presentation on ‘Mittelos Bioscience’, he showed Juliet x-rays that she thought were of a 75-year-old woman. Richard told her that she was actually looking at x-rays of a 25-year-old.

3) All pregnant women who conceive on the island die in their second trimester.

My theory on the island is that, though aging does not stop here, it slows down considerably and people are also healthier and heal faster. This leads me to believe that the island is a ‘fountain of youth’. I believe that the natives (people conceived and born on the island & have lived there for their whole lives) are the only people who can benefit from the youthful qualities, as Ben still got a tumour, etc. I think the natives are the only ones who can conceive and give birth on the island, and the Others are trying to find ways of getting outsiders pregnant on the island. The only remaining question here is how the natives actually got there.

Just a random tidbit, the heavy water tables located beneath the island (see blue map) and the electromagnetic properties of the island could play a large role in this. Also, the ‘sickness’ may not have been made up, it may have been a release of a deadly disease on the island to see how good the island’s healing properties really were.

FLASH to the 1970’s. Scientist Alvar Hanso is trying to find a way to ‘save the world’ with his numbers. How they are calculated we don’t know. He stumbles upon this ‘magic’ island and sees that it’s a researcher’s dream. So, he calls up all his corporate sponsors (including Widmore Industries, that’s important) and gets them to contribute to the new DHARMA Initiative. He doesn’t want the rest of the world finding out about the island’s magical properties, so he uses the electromagnetic properties of the island to create a force-field thing that bends the light and makes it REALLY hard to find the island unless you’re super lucky. He even installed jamming equipment just in case. La la la, the DHARMA initiative is heavily funded and is great until Ben’s purge.

Now, we fly over to Widmore Industries. Mr. Widmore is a sponsor or Alvar Hanso’s and is mildly interested in his work. Because he’s so flipping rich, he figures that he should buy into some save-the-world schemes as a security measure to protect his family and their fortunes. He maintains occasional ties with Hanso and contributes money to the Hanso Foundation regularly, but doesn’t really keep up with him. Nor does he know exactly where the island is, only that it’s hidden.

Then his daughter, Penny, falls in love with Desmond, who’s definitely not the right guy in his eyes. So after Des is put in jail, Mr. Widmore takes quick action. He collects all Desmond’s letters to Penny to use as leverage. He figures he’ll pay the guy off and hope he goes away forever. But when Desmond doesn’t take the money, Mr. Widmore needs Des to disappear quickly. Somewhere where NOBODY can find him, especially his strong-willed daughter. So when he finds out Desmond is entering in his sailing race, he calls up his old friend Alvar Hanso and offers him a VERY generous donation if he can make someone ‘disappear’ onto his island. Alvar agrees. Widmore covertly kills off Libby’s husband, and threatens her unless she gives her boat to Desmond. Hence Libby looks depressed when she gives him the boat.

Now Widmore knows when Des will be leaving and what route he’ll be taking. He calls up Hanso, who relays the info to some of his guys who, during the storm where Desmond is knocked out, kidnap and sedate him and transfer him to the beach where they know Kelvin will find him.

Of course, the DHARMA initiative is long dead, but Hanso used the fact that the Others neglected to purge the Swan station to his advantage. Since there are still VERY few people who know how to get to the island, he finds Kelvin Inman, a friend in the military, to go and man the station with Radzinsky, who is an old friend of his and relative of Mikhail, who is a double agent with him AND the others. Radzinsky knows all about the others, the purge, DHARMA, etc. but Kelvin does not. He tells him to keep it quiet. Radzinski disappears one day (aka, was tired of life in the hatch, and ever-so-conveniently met up with Hanso a week before Des’ arrival, and went back home) and Kelvin finds Des almost right away. He figures that he should keep Des in check by scaring him with the gasmask/disease line and telling him that Radz killed himself. The rest is history.

Of course, then there’s Penny. Once she finds out that it was her father, not Desmond himself, that cut off the communication, she tries to find him. Of course, by the time she finds out that he’s entered the sailing race, he’s already on the island. So her father lies and says that his boat was lost at sea. Penny is heartbroken until one day she somehow finds out about her father’s paying off Hanso to keep Des on the island and away from her. So she pays for an electromagnetic detection station in Siberia. Des does failsafe thing one day, and suddenly there’s a huge magnetic anomaly popping up in the middle of the pacific, where there’s supposedly nothing. ‘We’ve found it”.

Now, Hanso has always wanted to regain control of the island, and now it seems that he has the perfect opportunity to do so. He assembles a hardcore search and rescue team covertly, and gets Penny to hire that team without letting on it’s him. Using Penny’s cause as a cover, they get Naomi on the island with her phone. Now, when Des blew the Swan up, he altered the field around the island so the way in would be different and it would be very difficult to make it in alive. Naomi got lucky, and she has the phone, which would give them a bearing as to her wherabouts that they could follow in to the island. They probably weren’t expecting the jammer to be on or a large group of plane crash survivors to be on the island. But now that Jack has called, it’s only a matter of time before they get there to reclaim the island and revitalize DHARMA.
