Disse er hentet fra
The Fuselage VIP seksjonen

We have a plan.
We know what the island is.
We know what the monster is and its purpose.
We have a set series of "signposts" that we have to arrive at as we go through the season,
and most of these were decided on from very early on (deaths, births, abductions, revelations)
and work out the individual epsiodic storylines from there.
We spent a large amount of time early in the development of the series working out the character backstories so we understand the framework from which these people are coming - but also allow ourselves to be flexible and change things around as we see fit.
we have a master plan but allow ourselves "wiggle room" to explore other things as they reveal themselves to us.
It depends on the show (how long an episode takes to write).
on the average about a month and a half from soup to nuts... although i have seen episodes written in four to five days - i have also seen episodes written as they are being filmed, but that is a very costly way to work!
I will do my best to continue to be vague in as many words as possible!
About a year ago, while the pilot was being shot, there was a group of writers working on developing the series under damon and jj's guidance, myself included, we did indeed pick three names out of a hat and each of the writers had to brainstorm on the backstories for the characters -- and for that time, that writer was sort of "the keeper" of that character. That was very early on, much of the character makeup has changed since then, but a lot of things went on to become part of the greater mythology of the show.
Jin was shamed because she learned english behind his back and kept it a secret - it points to their marriage being in trouble and her being disloyal even though he doesn't know the particulars of it. why is sun afraid to admit it? uh - try confessing to a loved one that you planned on cutting them out of your life... not an easy thing to do under any circumstance!
Sawyer did indeed shoot the wrong guy.
Episode 22 is indeed called "born to run," and it centers around kate -- draw your own conclusions there.
as far as the scheduling goes -- it isn't just for suspense. we are making 24 episodes and have to stretch them out over an entire season, as well as show a certain amount of originals during sweep months, hence the reruns and so forth.
Ideally the show will run for years on end - i wasn't designed with a fixed timeframe (like babylon 5, say) but it does have a logical conclusion. how long the show will run is not up to us as much as to the whims of the marketplace, so we shall see how long it takes for us to get to that conclusion. on the second question, absolutely -- the show has a format that is perfect to do a very deep, intense exploration of character, and that is what we plan on doing!
Sorry. feeling a bit gallows-y there. truth is i can't really even hint about it at this point - but i'll tell you this, as huge and important as the character death is going to be, we have other stuff coming up that will be equally shocking and revelatory - so if the death throws you for a spin, don't worry, there'll be something along to spin you in the opposite direction soon thereafter.
The most important thing is that you approach it from the point of view of a character and craft the story and backstory accordingly. on this show, the flashbacks and the island story are of equal importance and they serve to illuminate one another - so you really need to figure out who's story you want to tell and go from there (especially since you really don't want to address major continuity in a spec).
A good thing to remember is also to keep it small - most of our stories address a day of life on the island and very specific incidents in the lives of the characters. the more you zero in on something relevant in the character's past as opposed to tackling the totality of what makes them who they are, the more likely you are to succeed.
Frankly, i don't sleep much. also i like the old situationalist slogan "live without dead time." i bore very easily and always like to be doing something. and i have a very understanding spousal unit.
The kremlin is looking very weird and poodly. i won't lie to you, it's strange, but he doesn't know any better, thank god. it's like he's having a protracted bad hair day.
my understanding is that charlie got out of the rest room, dodged a careening beverage service cart and then crawled far enough into the body of the plane to safely land on the beach...
I know that we generate synopses in the writer's offices but am not sure of they are the ones that wind up on the abc website. specific to ATBCHDI what jack and kate hear is not the monster but in fact a human scream. The monster has a very specific sound, and we only trot that out when we mean it!
..what's up with all the co-writing? not much - mostly it is a time saving measure, never hurts to get something done faster if you can keep the level of quality.
besides, you never turn down the opportunity to collaborate with someone like carlton cuse, much to learn i have!
the valley - as we like to call it (because while it has caves, it also is an open area between rock faces with a tree canopy) - occupies most of the interior of what was once a xerox factory. at the time lost got established in oahu there were already several shows filming there, the soundstage space was short and this was the best space to suit our needs.
the wreckage of the plane slowly being washed away by rising seasonal tides will be one of many issues explored in future episodes: in general our castaways have proven very adept at stripping what they need out of the fuselage - so i am sure that if and when it finally gets washed off it won't be a great loss...
...or will it?
did we intend for locke to become such a sex symbol? frankly, we intended to make an historical change in the fame-arc of most tv shows and turn the writing staff into the sex symbols... but alas we were foiled again.
In all seriousness, terry o'quinn is a tremendously magnetic actor who brings great strength and authority to everything he does, so while we didn't sit around saying "let's make locke a sex symbol" it was pretty clear to all of us from the beginning that the self-assuredness of his interpretation would make locke a popular character.
A vincent p.o.v. episode... hmmm... interesting... i wouldn't rule anything out, but i wouldn't hold my breath either.
No need to beg, here's the answer - the stuff that he put on the wound was a powerful homebrew hallucinogen that gave boone a vision quest experience.
Ee are usually still at work when the show airs in the east coast - wetend to gather informally and watch at least some of the east coast feed in the office, depending on our workload. do we get enough of each other during the week... i hope not, writers on series tend to see more of each other than they do their own spouses!
In a tv show, we have a very detailed outline that has been approved by the executive producers, studio and network before we write (that way everybody knows what's coming), so a lot of the kinks have been worked and reworked until they are solid. that is a big part of the writing process. then i pretty much go straight through using the outline i have already written as a guide - if i get stuck i might skip to another scene and go from there.
i usually rewrite as i go - on my writing days, i spend the morning composing new material and the afternoon reviewing and rewriting what i have already done, then, when the script is done, if i have the time, i take several more passes at the whole thing - pretty much until i am either convinced that i am done and can go no further without getting notes from my bosses, or until the deadline comes!
and yes, the process varies wildly, when i write for myself i tend to be much more exploratory, and i don't do the kind of rigorous outlining one does for a tv series. when i am just sort of working out or doing something on spec, i have to be disciplined and write, but it can take a lot longer, or a lot less time, and i pretty much go where the inspiration takes me.
dude!
I just answered your superstring question, now you're hitting me with the emf?
I mean, don't take this the wrong way, i'm not trying to be snappy or anything, but i'm just sayin'...why don't you just point blank ask me what the monster is, why the plane crashed and what is the true nature of the island?
In the immortal words of rusty ryan in "ocean's 12" -
- "it's not in my nature to be mysterious but i can't talk about it, and i can't talk about why i can't talk about it."
thanks for the question, sorry i can't be more specific. some secrets we have to reveal slowly, deftly... dramatically...
Without giving too much away, every episode has a theme and there are recurring themes to the whole series (broken family, parental issues, personal isolation, what it means to be a leader, the idea that everyone on the island was "lost" in their own way before they came to the island). it's hard to just say what is the writer's whim and what is truly thematic material, since there is a reason a writer puts anything down, and your interpretation of it is just as big a part of it. i guess the test of it is, of the motifs you have collected, which make sense to you as a viewer in terms of what you perceive as the theme of the show...
...eventually, everything that was meant to come together will come together...
We all work as a team on shaping the direction of the show - with jj, damon and carlton as the arbiters of what becomes canon, what gets to go on the screen etc. most of the big ideas come from the top, the triumvirate i just described, buit many come out of the writers' room as we go about the task of crafting the overall story. we do not have a book mapped out for all of the characters, but we have stories, themes and plans that we have developed for them, which we adopt, adapt and improve upon as we work on the individual episode ideas... we have a plan for everything, but we also have wiggle room to change as we discover what works and what doesn't...
1. What's the monster?
the most widely accepted theory is that he either is or is played by david fury.
2. What's up with the toy plane?
it's a replica of the dc-3, the world's most widely produced, longest in service and most successful paseenger plane... and it's a toy.
3. What caused the airplane crash?
the dramatic break up of the fuselage in mid-air. i think.
4. Is Locke good?
depends on your definition of good.
5. Who are the others?
According to sartre anyone not yourself (and therefore unknowable).
6. What do they want with Claire?
how do i know? they are not myself and are therefore unknowable.
7. What's Walt's secret?
he's more machine than man. domo arigato mister roboto.
8. When do the Fraggles show up?
Do you have a microphone somewhere in the writers' room, 'cause that's just uncanny!
I apologize in advance if i have not been infuriating or vague enough!
The key... it could be all the things you say, in fact. it is both a practical solution to the ammo safety problem, a reminder to kate of some of the lies she has told jack, maybe it's the key to his heart... and maybe a key is just a key. it's one of those things that serves a pracxtical purpose and is also open to interpretation.
Thanks for the compliment -- i'm glad you like the character, she is certainly dear to us! in answer to your question -- to my knowledge, sun is purely the product of jj and damon's fertile minds -- with ongoing embellishment from those of us who work on the show.
What can i tell you? i appreciate the feedback, but for the most part we gotta tell the story we gotta tell, sometimes that means more flashback/less island, sometimes the revers - it's not a decision that's institutionalized in the show's format, so the amount of time spent on either will vary depending on what we have to say that week and how much of one side has to inform the behavior of the characters on the other.
Two answers, one he was pre-boarded and placed in his chair before anyone else came on the plane, two it's possible that anyone who saw him either died in the crash, was far too traumatized to remember him as "the dude in the wheelchair" - especially sicne he has been walkming since they landed on the island, or was just minding their own business.
More resolution than you get in real life, less than you get in the average episode of "law & order."
or somewhere in between....
hi! i wish i could tell you that there is any one book that you could pick up that would help unlock the secrets of lost - but the fact is we are all, as writers, influenced by a lot of things - and even i don't know what everything that rages in the minds of jj and damon truly means. so i can't really stter you toward any one work of literature that will clear it all up... we try to keep lost as original as we can make it, even though we all have works by which we have been havily affected.
of course, if i were really mean i would say "if you read the unabridged finnegan's wake and all of the volumes of marcel proust's in search of lost time, then you truly will understand this tv show."
but i'm not mean.
It's a little of both - when we get it wrong, he sets it straight (i once wrote "you don't know sod-all" and dom was kind enough to point out that if you didn't know sod-all, you would actually know something).
I wouldn't do it differently -
It's jj and damon's show and my job is to give them my creativity, passion and ability to facilitate that vision - there are times when i have disagreed with them, but at the end of the day they have the final say, and i trust their ability to remain faithful to the show they want to make. if the time comes when i am in such sustained disagreement with them over the direction of the show that i can't give them 100% then that's my cue to move on to the next show!
when i'm doing my own series, i would expect nothing less from the producers who work for me.
We all work pretty closely in the writer's room to develop storiies, characters and dialogue - and the executive producers oversee all the writing, so it's not hard to keep the continuity. we don't really work in a vacuum.
I love trek - through not in all of its incarnations - i think it was an influence on me in that (when it was at its best, which to me is star trek 2: the wrath of khan, and tng and ds9 after their third seasons) it was an inspiration, a source of wonder, and a fantastically well-written show. to this day i am a huge admirer of ron moore's work (i am digging the hell out of galactica) - basically, in all matters trek, i'm just another fan!
I agree with you - the music on the show, both michael giacchino's original material and the choices for source cues is pretty awesome. i don't know re: whether there will be a soundtrack - that's a burky question.
Since there will be dvds and other merchandise, i imagine it's being considered somehwere as we speak.
They all have their own stories - whether we get to them or not, that's another question (remember, it took star trek TNG six seasons before they did the "lower decks" episode about a few of the other ensigns on the ship.
i'm sure you will be seeing more of the other survivors as the series matures.
The answer to your question is simple - jack already knew that kate had a criminal past that possibly included murder (as seen in "tabula rasa") and he was incensed at her lying to him - but she is also one of the few people on the island with whom he has developed a meaningful bond, and jack knows that kate isn't the conciliatory type. what you saw in "hearts and minds" was his trying to put aside his own pride and extend an olive branch to someone to whom he has a bond but someone he knew would be unlikely to extend it on her own.

Well, technically my episodes are 8 and 12 (the pilot counts as zero).
Spørsmål om alle de forskjellige hendelsene i serien blir knyttet sammen
All I can tell you is some dots will be connected, some won't. I've certainly tried to answer things in my eps, but as for the big picture... You'll just have to wait and see what Damon and Carlton come up with.
Spørsmål om Lost bare blir en miniserie
Oh, you can bet they'll stretch this thing out for as many years as they can
Well, I don't know where you heard that, but it's a vicious lie. There are no plans to move the location. We'll continue to shoot here in sunny, tropical Teaneck, New Jersey. (Spøk)
There is a lot of bargaining going on behind the scenes. But I'm certain the show will come to some arrangement with Hawaii to keep the series shooting there.
I'd be lying if I said we had some kind of show bible. Truth be told, B5 being an exception, most series don't. The most you can hope for is a season long arc. But, do we know what the big answers are to the main mysteries? Yeah. We just can't tell you or the show'd be over.
All I can tell everybody is, we're on the same ride they're on. Let's all try to enjoy it as long as it lasts. See where it takes us.
So far nobody's asked me to cameo. Maybe 'cause they'd have to fly me to Hawaii.
As far as any SMILE TIME type eps... I'd love it, but it's just not that kind of show. Everybody's so serious around here. But, who knows... There may be puppets yet, if I have my way.
(Which I don't. Curses!)
I would love to direct an episode, but I've chosen not to as it would require my leaving my family for three weeks or so to go to Oahu. Perhaps some day.
LOST - Walkabout. (More favorites to come, I hope)
The writing process is a lot different for reasons you didn't mention.
First of all, LOST has the same amount of writes that BUFFY or ANGEL had. Roughly seven. What makes it trickier is we have to write for a SIX ACT structure, as opposed to ME's TEASER PLUS FOUR ACT. We tend to treat the first act as a teaser, and I personally approach the sixth act as the coda scenes we'd do after the ACT FOUR climax on B or A.
There's also a sh*tload of more characters to have to service, and that makes for some unwieldy storytelling. As far as the rerun cycle... it plays no part in our writing process. We still produce a new episode every eight weekdays whether it airs next week or in two months.
As far as directing, it's come up several times, but, frankly, I can't see leaving my family for three weeks or so to accomplish it. If the show shot on this lot in one of the stages outside our offices, as ALIAS does, I'd enjoy it. Besides, I don't know about you, but I'd hate to think of Hawaii as a workplace. Just feels wrong.
There are currently LOST novelizations in the works. We don't quite supervise, but we set the guidelines for the stories before outside writers go off to write. It was more or less the same for BUFFY and ANGEL.
I, for one, would like to see the Flashback structure continue into next year. But it's yet to be discussed at length.
I kept telling Jack not to pull anything out, but he just won't listen, the jerk.
As I learned from working on BUFFY and ANGEL, logic must sometimes take a backseat to story needs. Remember, it's all fantasy. Just go with it, or the logic bumps will drive you MAD! MAD, I SAY!
TV production companies do some lobbying, but it's often up to the actors publicity person. And I couldn;t agree more about Terry being HUGELY deserving of one.
The only effect my name's had on me is that I'm constantly angry. And occassionally sleepy.
That bear carcass was lying in the jungle for days before anyone could've gotten to it. And polar bear liver is poisonous. And...
They hadn't run out of food yet. Still thinking they were gonna be rescued. And c'mon, who'd wanna eat bear when there's lovely boars around?
ABC is ENORMOUSLY supportive of the show. It's just more difficult and expensive to fly in cast members from Hawaii than it is to send a car to the homes of the lovely Desperate women.
The diaries are just a fun promo thing my b***h Raggs writes with our other assitant Dawn for the ABC site. They bare no relation to the actual show, except that they sometimes tease upcoming things.
Try posting to Raggs about it.
Jack DID indeed smother the life out of the Marshal after Sawyer botched it.
It never occurred to us until the episode aired. Just an unfortunate coincidence.
Weel, yeah. What's more evil than a Canadian, I ask you.
Spørsmål om hvorfor piloten ble drept
Once it was decided Jack would survive to be our main guy, somebody had to get chewed up by the monster.
